Exhibition Narrative
In 2020 and 2021, many of our assumptions about society, culture, and economic crises have taken a toll. We see in equal measure both the emergence of possibilities for rapid and transformative change and the deepening of existing negative stereotypes and narratives surrounding the entire COVID-19 situation in Africa.
We are inside a period of disruption that neither began nor will end with the COVID-19 pandemic and in social-economic-ecological crises of our time became vivid and present. The narrative and pictorial representation of Africa to the public have seen many stories told by the media are expounding on existing narratives of poverty, corruption, starvation, among others at the cost of the positive stories that break grounds, inspire, and celebrate the resilience of young people. While all this is happening, the most affected are the vulnerable individuals, especially youths, girls, women, and children; targets for such stories. Amidst the disruptions, we have seen hope. We have seen communities stepping up to practice the precautions required while staying positive. Therefore, this exhibition seeks to spotlight some of the many positive memories children have about the pandemic. We hope these can ignite a smile on your face and spark your mind to see positivity even in times of adversity.

He became interested in art during the lockdown. Adoa had a lot of time on his hand and had nothing else to do. Before then, he used to dislike people who were better than him. But one day, he watched a sermon on T.V., and it changed his life. And from that day on, he continues to strive to be better every day. Adoa stopped in form 4 and never had the opportunity to continue to A-level. Currently, he is focusing on his art; but does not have platforms to showcase; as one of his challenges. Hardships that people go through inspire his artworks, and use his art and create more awareness about these issues. His mother is his first support system, and he remembers her book. Being part of this exhibition is a lifetime opportunity for him and; also a chance to meet with other artists.

In 2018, he started to draw and learned about art as an opportunity from the Nakivaale refugee settlement located in the Isingiro district. He dreams of being a great artist in the world one day. He says that staying in a refugee settlement has allowed him to have a lot of time on his hands, and he uses it to make art. He paints about school life, Pan Africanism, and daily life. Being part of this exhibition is a dream come true. He advises fellow children to study hard when they have an opportunity because not everyone has the same opportunity.

She loves art and her parents as well. Since she doesn’t study, she spends most of her time practising art at Youth Rescue Organisation, located in the Nakivalee refugee settlement. Ever since she left Burundi and came to Uganda, it has not been easy for her and her family, but she is grateful that art has kept her mind focused and active. She wants to become a professional artist and become good at painting. She also wants to become an art teacher to pass on her knowledge to other people. Being part of the exhibition is a great opportunity for her to show her talent. Most people think that refugees, especially girls’ can’t do anything. However, she believes that when they see her painting, this mindset will change. She hopes to gain visibility for her works and make some sales to buy materials and continue painting. She advises young girls like her to learn skills like art to help them in the future.
Bilali Mugisha
17 years, Burundian
He learned art in a short period at the Youth Rescue Association. His dream is to become a professional artist and make money to support himself and his family. His parents were not supportive of him joining art. However, in a competition, he got selected, and his parents started to pay attention, and now, they encourage him to keep practising. Bilali loves art, and every time he is painting, he is telling a story. For him, art is important because he is using it to change the community where he lives. He would be practising painting every day. However, as refugees, they have no access to material in the camp. Dear fellow youths’, put effort into learning new skills because they can help any time, anywhere.

She started drawing while still very young at her primary level. She used to draw things like stickmen, flowers, boys and girls holding hands, and trees just like any other child. The objects she draws about now are out of the world. She doesn’t enjoy drawing interiors but imaginary things. She loves art as well as fashion and hopes to pursue both. Apio has an eye for art, and she loves everything artistic and enjoys putting things together. She also thinks that, later on, she will venture into events. As an artist, she gets her inspiration online, especially when she sees artworks from other artists. She doesn’t like to draw human faces because they give her a hard time, but she also knows that that’s not an excuse.

Faith knew how to draw ever since she knew how to write. However, she started to focus on drawing when she was 10 years old. She likes to draw nature, people, and the sunset. She believes that everyone can draw as long as they can express themselves. Art is not only for males but equally for females to compete. Her artwork continues to be inspired by the work in the community. During the lockdown, people worked in communities to address their issues and its depicted in her work. Faith advises fellow children to follow their dreams and go for them but never let negative people stop them. If you lost today, this does not mean you are a failure. Next time, you will do better.

Just like when people enjoy football, he enjoys comics. Julius loves to draw every time. At school, no one knew about comic art, and now, many know him as a comic artist. He started drawing when he was a senior because he enjoyed reading comic books. One day, he challenged himself to draw all the animations he watched. He wants to get better and use his comics to educate people about different things and entertain them. As he learns more about comics–he wants to venture into photography, videography, animations, and movies. As a research-oriented artist, this has helped him better his style and content. He walks to internet cafes to surf and learn more about comics, other artists in the world.

Elijah Tukashaba is 10 years old. He started drawing when he was 4 years old and is a middle child. His art inspiration was from the family who is an art teacher. His art career began from drawing his father’s car and was admired a lot. He wants to be both an artist and an architect.
Chadrack Bwato Makano
20 years old
as most know him @makano_arts because of his social media pages. A refugee multi-medium artist based in Nakivale settlement in Uganda. He started art while he was 8 years old at school. Then in late 2018, he focused on art seriously after losing his parents.
Makano believes that society speaks, and he feels like it is his job to reply. He chooses to speak through art because it is the only way he understands the world. Whenever he reads or writes words, he sees images.
In that way, art became a loud voice for him, actually louder than his normal voice. Most of his artworks speak about social-political issues intending to connect people and give a voice to the voiceless.
From 2018 until now, he has never participated in an exhibition because there has not been an opportunity; being part of this exhibition is a lifetime opportunity for him.

Her artworks seek to echo the life and struggles of young girls to engage the audience in examining the silenced world of teenage girls. While she uses a variety of materials and processes in each art piece, her methodology is consistent.
She has no grand illusions that art will create a revolution in the traditional sense, but she has witnessed the powerful changes it can make in an individual. Just one new idea can change a person’s perception. Creating art isn’t just an occupation to her; it’s a passion she enjoys bringing life to the canvas with vibrant colors and finding new ways to make people see things.
Her advice to fellow youths is to Dream big, believe in yourself, and put God first in everything you do.

Her dream is to become a famous painter. Both her sister and father have inspired her to do art. Art makes me happy, and she paints stories around her. Being part of this exhibition is an opportunity for her to share her work and stories with the world. She advises fellow children to work hard and do what they love, like her, who enjoys art.

Her dream is to become the best female artist in Uganda and this is based on her passion for the arts. She participated in the art contest because she wanted to show the world what a girl can do with her talent. Travelling to Kampala for the exhibition is the first thought that came into her head after she got the news of being selected in the finalists. Lajara advises other girls and youths to always use the opportunities presented to them because they might never know where they can lead them.

Her dream is to become a doctor. Playing baseball, netball and painting are the things she enjoys the most. These help her to keep busy, less bored and also to avoid keeping company with bad peers who might lead her into wrong actions. Participating in this group exhibition is a lifetime opportunity, a source of inspiration for her to do even more artworks. She advises other peers to always stay away from bad influence as well as be obedient citizens.

Her dream is to become an engineer and an artist. Some of the things she enjoys doing are helping people, learning new things, and praying. All this is inspired by her desire to be an example to others and show them that helping others is all that society needs. She feels good to be showcasing her artwork at the exhibition and feels closer to achieving her dream of becoming an artist. Her advice to other young people is to always be prayerful, fear God and also respect others.
