Just like you’d have your vegetables refrigerated otherwise they’d go bad just as soon, so are our fleeting experiences. We live with/meet people, we build memories and experiences together, we forge relationships so intimate and we grow so fond of them. However, the once vivid and close start to blur and become ever so distant and we’ll naturally try to cling onto those glimpses.
In the painting, the color blue evokes melancholy in a seemingly serene atmosphere. I use a room, and a refrigerator (the ‘box’ – a recurring motif in my artwork suggesting being boxed in or out.)
There’s a picture of a young lady on the wall appearing slightly in profile, a little more turn and she becomes totally unknown to me. The refrigerator door opens, and the light from it leads you to a picture of the young lady on the wall consequently, sort of ‘freezing’ the moment in the frame.
I think of a refrigerator as a metaphor for our tendency to want to cling to these nostalgic memories. The inspiration for the artwork is from the loss of a loved one.
