Where Nyipir/Gipir Ate Wild Fruits
Located in Aleng Upper village, Adolo parish, Ndhew sub-county, Nebbi district, Nyipir/Gipir Primary School was established on the site where Nyipir/Gipir’s son, Omyer Nyathirombo, reached with his wife Nyacana.
Oral tradition told to the respondents interviewed in Penji area near Nyipir/Gipir Primary School site holds that Nyipir/Gipir’s son Omyer Nyathirombo was carried by the Acer people to come and rule over them but not Nyipir/Gipir himself. The wife [Nyacana] of Omyer Nyathirombo died and was buried near the present-day Adeyra Primary school. Her grave is now marked by a rock [cana].
This was the first site of the school named in memory of the legendary Nyipir/Gipir. The school was later relocated to another place near Tangana market bearing the same name. The current school location is at the third place of relocation.
It was reported in Wang-Lei 2021 publication that Nyipir/Gipir moved from Rero to Nyipir/Gipir Primary School. However, according to respondents interviewed for this booklet, they say Nyipir/Gipir did not go in the direction of the current Nyipir/Gipir Primary school site, but he moved towards Nyariegi area. Another source maintains that Nyipir/Gipir rested at this very site for about four days feeding on wild fruits locally called usoi and ugo on his way from Alwi area to the present-day Congo.
The site is currently under threat from human activities such as stone quarrying, among others, and farming the land surrounding the site by the community members. Human activities are degrading the beautiful natural scenery and enactment of possible rituals at the site.
