Ssuuna Frank was born in 1996 in Masaka town, central Uganda. From his early years, he was always interested in drawing and felt the need to create. Ssunna found himself experimenting with different mediums to find one that could allow him to express himself comfortably. Through these experimentations, it became clear to him that painting and collage were those mediums. Ssuuna started painting with acrylic paint in 2018.
Painting helped him escape the negative perceptions in society associated with youth that are unemployed and haven’t gone further with their studies.
In 2019, Ssuuna met Masaka-based visual artist, Joe Bukenya, with who he got a chance to share a studio. This experience introduced Ssuuna to contemporary art and helped him conceptualize his works. Ssuuna is also inspired by American visual artist, Keith Oeschlarge.
In his career as a self-taught visual artist, Ssuuna created an art center called “Olympusy Arts Masaka” to give a chance to other creatives to manifest their talents.
His art has featured on Omushana clothing line based in Washington DC, and at Kako gallery, New Orleans 2020. Ssuuna’s work has been exhibited in an art show in Brooklyn, Newyork, titled “Facing It Together.”
The Artist is currently represented by Masaka gallery.
